Following the first International IP Enforcement Summit held in London in 2014, the second edition of this international gathering will bring together once again key European and international decision makers, enforcement agencies, multinational companies, consumer representatives and businesses.

This edition will look in particular at new trends and technologies, as well as explore alternative enforcement techniques relevant to the online environment.

    The programme:

The 2017 programme is organised into three main panel discussions:

Panel I. Current online trends and challenges
This panel will look at the evolution of the approach to IP enforcement: from targeting individual consumers to the so-called ‘follow the money approach’ (which aims to reach large-scale commercial organisations) or to learning from consumer trends. The panel will hold three sessions, each dealing with a different approach to enforcement: awareness and education, tools and strategies, and the impact of technology in business models.

    Panel II. Looking ahead
The second panel will present new ways to reconcile the interests of consumers with those of IP rights holders. In this panel, enforcers will share their experiences of dealing with organised crime. Other topics of discussion will include new technologies, to ensure the legitimate dissemination of content and distribution of goods, new ways of payment and remuneration methods for online transactions of IP-protected goods.

    Panel III. International cooperation
The summit will close with interventions by high-level representatives from ministries and international organisations, who will share their experiences of international IPR enforcement from an institutional point of view. The speakers will also address the need for better international cooperation and the sharing of operational best practices, both in policy making and enforcement.

    Summit Hosts & Keynote Speakers:

    Heiko Maas
Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection

The German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection is responsible for legislation in the area of intellectual property protection, which includes patent law, utility model law, design law, trade mark law, copyright and the law against unfair competition. It is equally concerned with matters of IP enforcement and supports the coordination and cooperation across the IP community to tackle counterfeiting and product piracy.

    Elżbieta Bieńkowska
Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs

The European Commission has responsibility for ensuring that appropriate mechanisms of protection and enforcement of IP rights are in place in the EU. It also works to improve their protection and enforcement in third countries.

    António Campinos
    Executive Director

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) is the EU agency responsible for managing the EU trade mark and the registered Community design. In 2012, the Office was given the responsibility for the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights which works to support the protection and enforcement of IP rights.
